LYNN— 3rd Essex State Senator Brendan Crighton today announced that he is endorsing Josh Zakim in his campaign for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State.

“I am endorsing Josh today for Secretary of State, because of his focus on protecting and advancing our right to vote. Voting is fundamentally a local issue and Josh will ensure cities and towns have the resources they need to protect the physical and electronic security of our voting system and to implement long overdue voting reforms,” Crighton said. “With Josh’s leadership, Massachusetts cities and towns will be able to count on the Secretary of State’s office for support in administering elections to improve the voting experience for everyone.”

Increasing voter turnout through ensuring voter access and security is the cornerstone of Zakim’s campaign. In particular, he has focused on expanding voter registration and voting rights. Zakim’s proposals have included allowing residents to register to vote on Election Day, further expanding early voting, and holding statewide elections on weekends.

Crighton served three years as State Representative before being elected to the Senate this year. He is a lifelong resident of Lynn who previously served two terms as Ward 5 Councilor before becoming Councilor at Large.

“Brendan’s work as the Chair of the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government and his experience serving as Lynn City Councilor has given him unique insight into the issues facing Massachusetts’ cities and towns,” Zakim said. “He understands what we face and the challenges that we need to address across the Commonwealth. I’m honored to have his support.”

Zakim, who was elected to the Boston City Council in 2013 and chairs the Civil Rights Committee, led the city’s recent initiatives to make it easier for eligible residents to register to vote.

“The Secretary of State’s office is vital to every single person in Massachusetts, even if they don’t realize it,” Zakim said. “From eligible voters to business owners to investors to residents who simply want to know what is happening with their tax dollars, this is their office, and I will be fighting in their corner every day.”
