BOSTON–– State Representative Dylan Fernandes, who represents Falmouth, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, today announced that he is endorsing Josh Zakim in his campaign for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State.

“I believe Josh’s progressive leadership could not be more critical in the current political landscape,” Fernandes said. “Voting rights are civil rights, and I believe that Josh’s proposals for same-day voter registration and no-excuse absentee voting will make those rights easier to access for the people of Massachusetts.”

Fernandes was elected in 2016 and serves on the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture; the Joint Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use; Recovery; and the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government; as well as the House Committee on Redistricting.

“Now more than ever Massachusetts needs leaders who are championing the rights of communities that have not had equal access to the political process,” added Fernandes, who has been a tireless advocate for the LGBTQ community and the Equal Pay for Equal Work Movement. “I know that Josh will be a true ally for the historically marginalized by making the voting process more accessible and government more transparent.”

“I’m honored to receive Dylan’s endorsement,” Zakim said. “I’ve been very impressed with his impact on both the communities he represents and Massachusetts as a whole. He’s clearly a rising star in our party and I’m looking forward to working with him to make government more accessible to everyone in Massachusetts.

“Across the nation, voting rights are under assault,” Zakim concluded, “Massachusetts must set the example, must be a leader on guaranteeing the right of all citizens to vote and ensuring government is answerable to those citizens. As Secretary State, I will fight every day to strengthen our democracy by making it accessible to everyone.”
