BOSTON—Jamaica Plain Progressives announced today that they are endorsing Josh Zakim in his campaign for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State.

“From his early career with Greater Boston Legal Services fighting for working families facing home foreclosures to his efforts on behalf of immigrant communities and issues of housing access on the Boston City Council, Josh has a history of fighting for equity, fairness, and justice. We believe he will bring these values to the office of Secretary of the Commonwealth to achieve more transparent and accessible government,” said William Poff-Webster, Co-Chair of JP Progressives in an email statement to members. The endorsement was approved by the JP Progressives’ voting membership.

JP Progressives is a group of progressive activists representing 3,000 members and 150 active volunteers from their neighborhood in Boston and surrounding areas. They are committed to bringing progressives together to help build electoral power, mobilize around issues, build a progressive community and engage members of the Jamaica Plain community. This is the organization’s first major endorsement vote in a contested election.

Zakim’s run for Secretary of State emphasizes the importance of making government more accessible, especially to those families who are juggling multiple jobs and responsibilities. His proposals include allowing residents to register to vote on Election Day, further expanding early voting and hosting statewide elections on weekends. As a member of the Boston City Council, Zakim has advocated for the rights of immigrants, writing and sponsoring the Boston Trust Act.

“As progressives, we see the value in having a more activist Secretary of State pushing for critical reforms aimed at boosting voter turnout and improving access to public records. Zakim enthusiastically supports critical policies like automatic voter registration, expanded early and weekend voting, and no fault absentee ballots,” continues the statement.

“I am thrilled to earn the support of the JP Progressives,” said Zakim. “Their dedication to bringing progressive values to the forefront of political debate is exactly what Massachusetts needs when it comes to voting access and government transparency. I look forward to collaborating with the JP Progressives as Secretary of State to continue promoting our shared values.”
