State Senator Eric Lesser Endorses Josh Zakim for Secretary of State

July 16th, 2018

BOSTON––State Senator Eric Lesser, who represents the nine communities of the First Hampden & Hampshire District, today announced his endorsement of Josh Zakim in his campaign for Secretary of State.

“Josh’s campaign to increase access to government for more people in Massachusetts is exactly what the Commonwealth needs in this day and age, when the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans are trying to restrict access to the ballot box,” Lesser said. “It’s our job to ensure that every voice is heard, and Josh’s ideas and energy will go a long way to making that happen.”

Lesser specifically referenced Zakim’s support of Automatic Voter Registration, Election Day Registration, weekend voting, expanded early voting and no excuse absentee voting, among other initiatives.

A former aide to President Barack Obama, Lesser was elected to Senate in 2014, and has focused his work on innovation in government, transportation, economics and job training. He chairs the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies. Lesser has prioritized legislation related to substance abuse treatment and prevention and the expansion of high speed passenger rail service connecting Springfield and Boston.

“I am honored to receive Eric’s endorsement,” Zakim said. “His ideas about bringing innovation to help make our government more efficient is exactly what I will do as Secretary of State. With his help, I believe we can create a better system for voters.

“The Secretary of State must be a proactive, progressive leader willing to fight to improve access to government,” he continued. “I will fight every day to ensure people can exercise their right to vote and then clearly see how the officials elected with those votes are doing their job.”
